World Bear Weekend coming to Lexington in 2018

LEXINGTON — A new bear event, World Bear Weekend, will be coming to Lexington’s Marriott Griffin Gate Resort & Spa in August 2018.

“I created this event to blend several communities together into one grand event!” said organizer Adam Rodriguez-Routt. “Bear, Leather, Puppy, Bootblack, Kink… there’s something for everyone.”

The event is open to the bear, leather, kink, puppy and bootblack communities from across the world. Along with parties, there will be a total of six contests:

  • Kilt International
  • World Bear
  • World Bear
  • World Cub
  • Mr./Ms. World Bootblack
  • Mr./Ms. World Puppy

Mr. Kilt International is open to any male who wears kilts and is willing to promote the contest throughout the year. Mr. World Bear and Mr. World Cub is open to any gay or bisexual titleholders (transgender or cisgender) from any country in the world. Ms. World Bear is open to contestants who identify as female. The bootblack and puppy contests are open to contestants for all gender identities. Only state, regional, national, and international titles are accepted to enter. The titles can be from the past five years.

Registration opens August 23, 2017. Early-bird registration for the full weekend pass starts at $100, and includes access to all events, food, drinks, transportation to bars, vendor market, workshops, etc. Optional excursions are available for only $20 more for Bourbon Distillery and Winery Tours. The host resort will start accepting online reservations on September 6, 2017.  Costs are $124/night for king or 2 queen rooms; $224/night for king suites; $324/night for hospitality suites; and $424/night for presidential suites.

There will be seven judges on the panel for the World Bear Weekend Contest.  Six of the judges selected will have received national/international titles, and will be well-recognized in their respective communities.  The judges’ identities will be revealed in the coming months. The first judge will be David Goodman, publisher of Bear World Magazine.

A large portion of the proceeds will be going to Rainbow Railroad. In the spirit of and with homage to the Underground Railroad, the mission of the Rainbow Railroad is to help LGBT people as they seek safe haven from state enabled violence, murder or persecution.
