When Politics, Kink, and Media Collide
The headlines were splashed across the front pages of every regional newspaper:
“BDSM Porn Convention Whips Up Some City Aldermen!”
“Kinky Event at Conference Center Draws Ire”
“City Scrutinizing Sex Convention Permits”
What do you do when your local BDSM community is at the middle of a political uproar? Can the group leaders protect your privacy while the organization is under scrutiny? What happens to a local community when a spotlight appears on their activities? Do inter-group relations go down hill and if so, what can be done about it?
In 2011, STL3, the producer of two popular Midwest BDSM conventions, found themselves the center of attention for the local media and politician. During this discussion JSin, the chair of STL3, will share with you how their group handled the potential fall out, how they dealt with the media, how they handled the local politicians, and what the long lasting effect was on the St. Louis community.

About JSin and Faye
Jsin & Faye came into the lifestyle in 2004 and quickly found their way to STL3. He soon discovered that his personal goals and experience were an excellent match with those of this organization. As a volunteer on the Event Committee, he worked diligently with his mentors and quickly excelled in all aspects of event administration. Jsin eventually earned a place as Event Chairperson, where he successfully produced Beat me in St. Louis and Spanksgiving, two of the mid-west’s premier BDSM lifestyle events that welcome people from all facets of the community.
Jsin is currently on the Board of Directors of STL3, a 501c7 Educational Social group. He is also Chairperson of their Management Committee. He is also a Co-Founder and former Board Member of the Saint Louis Chapter of MAsT International. In addition, he is Co-Founder of the St. Louis Area Whip Enthusiasts group, and an active member and supporter the Fetish Lifestyle Open Group of St. Louis (FLOG-St. Louis).
Jsin has taught classes on Poly lifestyle, Beginner Whip throwing, Caning, and Event productions. He is currently working with several groups in St. Louis to build a strong education based environment for those interested in the lifestyle practices to have a safe place to learn from all the talent from the St.Louis are as well as those who can make arrangements to come visit the area to help further the education of the local community.
