DES MOINES — One Iowa, the state’s leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organization, was sad to hear of our dear friend Larry Hoch’s death on Friday, Oct. 21. Our thoughts and prayers are with his husband, David Twombley, and Hoch’s many friends and family.
Hoch was a middle school teacher from New York. In 2000 he came to Iowa to be with Twombley, a music teacher. The two were one of six courageous plaintiff couples in the Varnum v. Brien lawsuit, which established same-sex marriage in Iowa in a unanimous decision by the Iowa Supreme Court in 2009. Hoch was a long-time supporter of marriage and LGBT equality, and he and Twombley were regular attendees at One Iowa events.
“Larry was our friend, a kind and spirited and generous man,” One Iowa Executive Director Donna Red Wing said. “He will be greatly missed by his friends at One Iowa.”
