DES MOINES — One Iowa, a statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) advocacy organization, and Iowa Energy, the state’s NBA D-League affiliated professional basketball team, are partnering to host an LGBTQ Night at Wells Fargo Arena on Monday, Feb. 13. Iowa Energy’s 7 p.m. game will be followed by a courtside drag show hosted by Miss Gay Iowa USofA.
“This is an amazing opportunity for One Iowa and Iowa Energy to create dialogue and provide a venue to showcase inclusion,” One Iowa Executive Director Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel said. “As a former high school athlete who played basketball and was not comfortable being out, I am excited that this partnership might help others bring their full, authentic selves to sports. It is amazing and groundbreaking for a professional sports organization in Iowa to embrace the LGBTQ community.”
Tickets are available to the public for $15 and may be ordered online (ticket link here) or by calling Iowa Energy at 515-564-8558. A portion of ticket proceeds will be donated to One Iowa to fund their work preserving and advancing equality for LGBTQ Iowans.
“We are proud to host this night in partnership with One Iowa,” Iowa Energy CRO Kyle Davy said. “The NBA Development League is a melting pot of nationalities, beliefs, and backgrounds, and it’s important to the Iowa Energy that we support and embrace every single one of our fans, staff, and players regardless of race, sex, nationality, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”
