New North American Bear Sashed in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Mr. North American Bear Contest took place on Saturday, Feb. 22, where eight contestants from all over the United States competed for the internationally-recognized Mr. North American Bear title.

Rex Wesley, from Los Angeles, took home the coveted “Bear” title, along with the $500 cash prize + free pass to next year’s event.  Four additional “runner-up” titles were given as well to:  Vincent Snyder (Bear Hunter); Cody Allman (Cub); Howard Bunger (Muscle Bear); and Robert Garrett (Daddy Bear).  The other three additional candidates who competed were:  Anthony Baucom, Richard Parmer, and Nathan Chalgren.

The Mr. North American Bear contest is only open to gay men who have won a title from the past (5) years from a bar/state/regional/bear contest. Five non-local judges helped decide the winning candidate(s): Eldon Kirby (Washington); Keith Ackerson (Ohio); Curtis Bass (California); Jeff Culbert (Tennessee); David Goodman (Great Britain).

More than 425 attendees from all over the world attended the 4-day weekend of fun, fur, and frolic – presented by the Kentucky Bourbon Bears. The 3rd annual North American Bear Weekend took place February 20-23, 2014 at the historic Campbell House in Lexington, KY. Guests enjoyed an action-packed itinerary of events, including: three pool parties; four cocktail parties; three hot buffet breakfasts, two lunches, and a buffet dinner; a comedy show by Peter Bisuito (also our event emcee); an on-site bourbon tasting; an off-site excursion to a bourbon distillery; charity strip auction; toga dance party; private concert by Rusty Shields; and the Mr. North American Bear Contest! More than 35 gift baskets were raffled with all proceeds from the weekend event going to Moveable Feast Lexington – an organization dedicated to providing hot meals to HIV/cancer patients living in the Lexington-Fayette County area.

The Kentucky Bourbon Bears are already planning their 4th annual event – which will have a “Lumberjacks & Long Johns” theme. The event will take place Feb. 26-March 1, 2015 at the same venue – The Campbell House in Lexington, Ky.
