Missourians to rally against SJR 39 this Thursday

SJR 39

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — PROMO, Missouri’s gay rights organization, announced today that they are taking part in a rally to oppose SJR 39, a proposed amendment to the Missouri constitution that would allow religious organizations and private businesses that provide wedding services to discriminate against gay couples. Think of it as Indiana’s RFRA on steroids.

The bill passed the state senate last week despite a filibuster by Democratic legislators. Here’s the text from PROMO’s announcement.

Missourians across the state will rally in opposition of SJR 39 at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City this Thursday. SJR 39 would create a constitutional amendment for a public, statewide vote, that would allow businesses to refuse services to same-sex couples based on religious beliefs.

Petitions will be delivered to Speaker Todd Richardson’s office on Thursday after the rally. The petition signed by thousands of Missourians across the state are urging Speaker Richardson to take a stand against SJR 39. The proposed amendment passed the Senate and is in the House waiting to be referred to a committee.
