Lily Emerson

CHICAGO – Lily Emerson has been named the 2014-2015 Visiting Scholar at the Leather Archives & Museum. Ms. Emerson is a doctoral candidate at the University of Auckland (Auckland, New Zeland).  She received her MA in History in 2012.  Ms. Emerson will spend time at the Leather Archives & Museum during the 2014-2015 academic year conducting research toward her doctoral thesis.

Lily Emerson’s research follows the development of sadomasochism in the United States, with a particular focus on the cities of San Francisco and Chicago. Her research attempts to chart the overlapping discourses which have constituted sadomasochism as a sexual category and identity. In so doing, it explores four key sites of elaboration: the medico-sexological, the social-scientific, actual practitioners (and their politics), and the ways in which sadomasochism is represented in popular culture.
