DETROIT – We had a very successful first munch, so we’re going to do some practical work on the 18th!
HavenHouse RULES still apply, even in the daytime!
I will be bringing my supplies, which people are welcome to pick over and use (respectfully and with permission!) if they have leather they want to work on. I’ll also probably be giving a quick 15-20 minute demo of the (pretty basic) technical knowledge that I have, go over the basic supplies that I have, bring some different boots, shoes and/or gear so people can get some hands-on experience with different types of leather (hard shine, matte finish women’s dress, patent, oil tanned, etc.) and answer as many questions as I can or else write down the question and find someone more experienced to answer it for you. I will be happy to turn it over to anyone else who has a different technique or style — we’re all here to learn from each other.
If you plan to work, please come dressed comfortably and in clothes you don’t mind getting a little bit dirty. I will try to remember to bring gloves for people who want to keep their hands clean — if you want to bring your own, please bring nitrile, since they’re non-reactive with common blacking supplies.
PLEASE feel free to bring your own supplies and your own leather gear, of whatever kind, either to teach with, to show-and-tell, because you have questions or just because you want to work on it with company. Please also feel totally okay about showing up empty-handed — we’re all here to learn and people who don’t know anything about it but want to learn more are always welcome.
If you’re more interested in being the recipient of some bootblacking love, please feel free to come wearing your gear and we’ll see if there are any takers 🙂 Keep in mind that this is primarily a learning event for bootblacks; be flexible and understanding.
