CHICAGO – Colin of Covington, Ky. won the Mr. Midwest Rubber contest on Saturday, July 21, becoming the first winner to come from outside the Chicago metro area. Colin was one of three contestants running this year at Touche. Outgoing MMR Pleek had travelled the region to promote rubber and the contest and his efforts had paid off.
MIR 2003 Rubberwilli was the emcee of the contest. The judges are Mr. International Rubber 2012 Sly Hands from Manchester, England; Mr. Cockpit Tynan Fox of Minneapolis; Mr. Chicago Leather 2012 Angel Velez; the first Mr. Midwest Rubber Dan the Rubberman; and Mr. Midwest Rubber 2011 Pleep. Another former MMR Rocco is serving as den daddy and Mr. Chicago Leather 2011 Jason Southerland is serving as tallymaster.
There was a remembrance and toast to Roger Hickey of Chicago, who was the former owner of Chicago’s Cellblock bar and a founder of the Mr. International Rubber (MIR) contest. He past away last week. Rubberwilli said that it was because of Roger’s support and work that the rubber community has its current active and vibrant form. “He wouldn’t want us to be down, because that’s now how he was,” Rubberwilli said. “So raise your drinks high for Roger.”
The contest had four parts. Rubber image, Questions, Jock Strap and Mystery Bag. For those who have never been to MIR, the Mystery Bag is when contestants choose from a selection of bags and use whatever they find inside to do an impromptu scene. Mr. Minneapolis Leather 2011 Derek Harley was the victim. Or benefactor depending on your point of view. Since every bag had at least one messy food item (including tartar sauce in one bag), it was a good thing that rubber can clean very easily.
The bar was packed for the contest, one of the biggest crowds for MMR since the contest started in 2003. Colin will represent the region at MIR in November at the Center on Halsted.
